  • Start cucumber seeds indoors no more than 3-4 weeks before your last frost date to prevent root binding, as cucumber plants can experience transplant stress if they grow too large. Alternatively, cucumber seeds can be direct-sown outdoors, even in shorter growing seasons.

Plant seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep, covering them with soil, and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs within 5-10 days, though it may take longer in cooler soil temperatures.

For spacing, leave 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) between plants if they are allowed to sprawl, or space plants 1 foot (30 cm) apart if using a trellis to support upward growth.

  • Cucumis sativus
