  • Lupin seeds can be difficult to germinate. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed outdoors in the fall or early spring when the soil can be worked.

To improve germination, scarify seeds by lightly scratching the surface with sandpaper, or use nail clippers to gently remove small pieces of the seed coat, then soak in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting.

Press seeds lightly into the soil and cover with 1/8 inch (3 mm) of soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 14-28 days. Germination may take longer in cooler temperatures.

Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date into a sunny location, spacing plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. Lupins prefer well-draining soil and benefit from minimal watering once established.
