For earlier blooms, start Cosmos seeds indoors about four weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
Press seeds lightly into the soil and cover sparingly. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 3-10 days, though cooler temperatures may extend this period.
After the last frost, transplant seedlings into a sunny outdoor location, spacing plants 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) apart. Taller varieties, like Hinomaru Cosmos, may require support in windy areas to keep stems upright.
