Start Blue False Indigo seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed outdoors in the fall.
Seeds benefit from cold stratification for improved germination. Place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag or container and refrigerate for 3-4 weeks before planting. Stratification is not needed for fall seeding.
Press seeds lightly into the soil and cover with a thin layer. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 10-30 days but may take longer in cooler temperatures.
After your last frost date, transplant seedlings into a sunny or part-shade location, spacing plants 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart. Blue False Indigo is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in well-draining soil.
