  • For best results, start onion seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.

    Sow seeds ¼ inch (6 mm) deep and keep soil evenly moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7–14 days. Provide bright light and cool conditions to encourage strong, sturdy seedlings.

    After the risk of hard frost has passed, transplant or thin seedlings to a sunny location, spacing plants 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly and keep beds weed-free for best bulb development.
